Overwatch 2 is a work in progress with multiple fixes from Blizzard and more coming up

Blizzard has already removed the SMS Protect system and fixed the Auto-Purchase of items bug. While log-in queues and matchmaking issues have already received multiple updates, things are yet to get better. Here's all the latest on Overwatch 2.

One of the biggest games of 2022, Overwatch 2, met with a rocky start, with its launch on October 4. The sequel to 2016’s Overwatch, launched only a day after Blizzard Entertainment shut down the live service game that started it all. Though the intention was to redirect Overwatch fans to the sequel, things didn’t quite go as planned. From twin DDoS attacks to long matchmaking queues, and an SMS protect security system that only post-paid users were eligible for, the woes were almost endless. Almost a week into the launch, Blizzard has issued a public apology to fans for the inconvenience, while fixing a number of problems. Updates have rolled, albeit not major ones, over the weekend as well. Let us now check what issues have been resolved already, improving the game over the past six days.

Overwatch 2: Issues Resolved

SMS Protect no longer required for Battle.net account holders

The SMS Protect was announced to be removed on October 8th, Saturday. We are talking about a provision that required console and PC players to link their existing Battle.net accounts with an essentially post-paid number while migrating their accounts to the new game. The move was widely criticized online, and Blizzard ultimately shared on October 6 that they would remove the requirement altogether.

Login, Queues, and Account Merge Issues of Overwatch 2 addressed

On 7th October, Friday, Blizzard put out an announcement that they would be taking the servers down for 4 hours to deal with these issues in particular. They conducted upgrades to their databases, while fixing bugs related to account merges and logins. For more context, players were unable to complete their account merges to transfer items and progress from Overwatch (2016) to the new game. At the same time, those who somehow could complete the process found many or, in some cases, all of their inventory items missing. On 7th October, Blizzard notified that they’ve developed a working solution, and things are getting better with time. More players are reportedly getting to see their full collections. However, they also added that the queues will keep reducing only with time.

Auto-Purchase of heroes and cosmetics

A bug that emerged while chatting in the game, triggered the automatic purchase of items, like the Junker Queen’s Plutonium skin. While the issue was reportedly resolved with the October 7th update itself, Blizzard is not issuing refunds for the purchase. The Plutonium skin is worth 300 legacy credits, and Blizzard only got back with “all those unlocks are meant to be final”, even if accidental.

Overwatch 2: A work in progress

LC-208 issue

In the latest update from Blizzard, which was dropped on October 9th, Sunday, they have announced that fixes are being rolled out to address “many of the remaining LC-208 errors”. This is an error code that keeps popping up preventing players from connecting online. It is currently one of the most viewed topics on Blizzard’s Support page.

Additionally, there are reports of items from the Watchpoint pack not visible on consoles. Blizzard has notified that they have a fix being prepared to be deployed soon to resolve this. They’ve also notified that the matchmaking system is also being worked upon given that the progressively higher player concurrency is affecting it. Apart from these, updates for crashes and issues like black screens were reportedly rolled on October 7th. But we are yet to receive an official status report on how far they have been effective. Blizzard however has announced a new detailed update scheduled for October 10.
