Intel launches 13th Gen "Raptor Lake" desktop processors with more cores and threads; Here are the new features, specs and more

Intel launched its 13th Generation Raptor Lake desktop processors, with six models from the K series at Intel Innovation 2022 held yesterday. Here's everything you need to need to know on the latest and upcoming generation of CPUs from Intel.

Intel held its latest edition of the Intel Innovation on September 27th. The event is an awaited landmark for the company, where it has launched some of its most important innovations in the past. This year, Intel has unveiled the 13th Generation Intel core processors for desktop, a year after the launch of the Intel 12th Gen cores. Evidently, Intel has taken things up a notch, and we’ll now get into the specifics of it.

Essence of the Intel 13th Gen Core Desktop Processors

Intel’s trademark core technology is based on a hybrid architecture, involving a combination of Performance cores and Efficiency cores. Working together, they smartly optimize the workload by distributing it among themselves for maximized performance. The Performance-cores (P-cores) are designed for single-threaded performance while the Efficient-cores (E-cores) are designed for multi-threaded and multi-tasking performance.

Intel 13th Gen Core processors- Specifications

The latest 13th Gen Intel Core processor family, has 24 cores, with 32 threads, for a maximum turbo boost as high as 5.8 GHz. Here’s a comparison with the 12th Gen Intel Core processor family for your understanding of the improvements.

PROCESSOR FAMILY CORES THREADS TURBO BOOST
13th Generation Intel  24 (8 P-cores, 16 E-cores) 32  5.8 GHz
12th Generation Intel     16 (8 P-cores, 8 E- cores)         24     5.2GHz

Intel says, that these extra E-cores of the 13th Gen processors result in up to 41% better “multi-threaded performance”. Along with the combination of the higher turbo boost, there’s a 15% increase in the quality of single-thread performance as well. As a result of which, we’ll get a higher push for more frame rates, and for the best of gaming experiences, the more, the better and smoother.

K Series desktop processors revealed for Intel 13th Gen

Coming to the type of processors, Intel has currently revealed only 6 Intel core “K” processors. Intel uses the K to denote unlocked processors, which can be used to overclock the CPU. Additionally, Intel has also announced an update on its one-click overclocking feature- the Intel Speed Optimizer. Along with this, the Intel Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) 3.0 ecosystem provides a wide range of overclocking modules to choose from.
Other features typical of Intel to include, are the DDR4 and DDR5 memories, powered by the Intel Memory Boost.

Raptor Lake- launch and availability

Apart from these, there are 18 more coming soon, in partnership with 125 system designs lined up. Acer has already refreshed its products with the Predator Orion 7000 (PO7-650) series unveiled, featuring the 13th Gen Intel processors. Dell’s Alienware on the other hand, has refreshed its Aurora R15, with 13th Gen Intel processors and NVIDIA’s latest RTX 40 series GPUs. The price range hasn’t yet been revealed. However, Intel has announced that its 13th Gen Intel Core desktop “K” processors will be available as soon as the 20th of October this year. Sales of boxed processors of the 13th Gen, along with motherboard and desktops can also be expected to hit the market after that.
