Elden Ring speedrunner reclaims their record just days after losing it; manages to complete the game under 7 minutes

MitChriz broke Distortion2's earlier sub-20-minute speedrun, before being beaten again by Distortion2. Here's everything you need to know.

Elden Ring has now become the new rave for speed runs. The first sub-20 speed run record was set on March 28 by YouTuber Distortion. Within two weeks the record was broken by YouTuber MitChriz in under 13 minutes. Distortion 2, however, was quick to reclaim their title as the world’s fastest speedrunner of Elden Ring. On April 11th, the streamer completed the world’s first sub 9 minutes speedrun. Their latest record however is that of the world's first sub 7 minutes speedrun, created on 12th April. Here’s everything you need to know.

Elden Ring is a product of FromSoftware, who are also the creators of Souls and Bloodborne series. Players have been practicing speed runs for ages in these games. Elden Ring has often been compared to these games and this isn’t just because it comes from the same developers. Elden Ring is considered to be a more complex, intricate, much layered, and a vaster version of canon RPGs of FromSoftware. As a result, we have a lot of YouTubers and Twitch streamers, attempting to create their own records on the game, in less than two months of the game's release.

Elden Ring Speedrunner breaks sub-7-minute mark

Distortion2, who specializes in speedruns of RPGs from FromSoftware, has a number of Elden Ring records to their name. He was the first gamer to have completed a sub 30 speedrun. This record was created on March 14. On March 28, he then went on to complete the first sub 20 minute speedrun. On April 8th however, YouTuber Mitchriz completed the game in 12 minutes, 32 seconds, making the world’s first sub13 minute speedrun. Their success, however, was as short-lived as only 3 days, as Distortion2 reclaimed their title as the world’s fastest Elden Ring speedrunner. On April 11, Distortion2 completed the world’s first sub-9 minute speedrun, having completed Elden Ring in exactly 8 minutes, and 56 seconds.

In the description of the sub 9-minute speedrun, he did say "Will keep grinding this for sub 7 :)". Evidently, they did, and on 12th April, Distortion2 completed Elden Ring in 6 minutes, 59 seconds only, making it the world's first sub 7 minutes speedrun.

However, all of these speedruns are Any% runs, which means that glitches and other bugs can be exploited as per convenience, and it won’t be considered foul play. There however still is a difference between cheating and taking advantage of cracks in the system of the game. Distortion2 has consistently been making use of ‘zips’ throughout their speedruns.

On the other hand, the patches from the developers have been getting better at blocking these glitches which makes it difficult for speedrunners. However, they have in all probability been restricting their game updates in order to keep making use of the glitches.
