Cyberpunk 2077 surpassed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, FIFA 23 as top-selling game on Steam; records more concurrent players than Witcher 3
Cyberpunk 2077 recorded more than a million active players per day as Netflix's Edgerunners and latest patch attract gamers to Night City.
Cyberpunk 2077 became the top-selling game on Steam as it overtook upcoming titles Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and FIFA 23 to hold that top spot for a brief period of time over the weekend. While the game from CD Projekt Red has slipped a few ranks down, it’s still in the top 10 selling games on Steam. It’s still quite an achievement for the game from 2020 to overtake upcoming games from two of the biggest video games franchise.
Cyberpunk 2077 became top-selling game on Steam
Since Netflix released Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, players have been flooding Night City to experience the cyberpunk world for themselves. The anime show and the content update based on it brought a sudden surge in the game’s popularity. Cyberpunk 2077 also finally surpassed the peak concurrent players count of Witcher 3 which was CD Projekt Red’s previous best-selling game.

Cyberpunk 2077 recorded 133,070 concurrent players count on September 25, more than the all-time peak record of Witcher 3 which stands at 103,329 players. CD Projekt Red was also running a sale on Cyberpunk 2077 over the weekend on Steam. Cyberpunk 2077 was available at half the price during the sale which is now over. Netflix’s anime show, the content update, and the sale all played their part to revive Night City.

Edgerunners-inspired content and mods
Edgerunners did not only arrive on Netflix but also made its way to the open-world game. The new patch 1.6 brought various Edgerunners-inspired content to the game including new weapons. Patch 1.6 also brought cross-progression to the game allowing players to continue their progress regardless of the platform they’re playing on. You can check out everything the new update has to offer in the official Cyberpunk 2077 1.6 patch notes. There's also a free DLC planned for Cyberpunk 2077 which will release in 2023.
Speaking of Edgerunners, it has inspired many modders to create new mods for Cyberpunk 2077. Several mods are making their way to Nexus Mods like Rebecca's pistols, David’s haircut, and even a face preset for Lucy which has been extremely popular with 15,340 unique downloads so far.
Cyberpunk 2077 resurgence
For those unfamiliar, Cyberpunk 2077 was launched in 2020 and it arrived as buggy as one could imagine. Failing to deliver a bug-free, functional game, the studio even had to offer refunds to people who bought the game. While the infamous game from 2020 seemed like a promise that would not be fulfilled, CD Projekt Red developers kept working to improve the game and deliver the game that was promised to gamers. It’s been two years and the devepores released more than 4 major patches to fix all the game-crashing bugs, NPC behaviour problems, stability and graphics issues.
