Are Dead by Daylight crossovers moving up the relevance ladder?
There’s a huge debate going on about whose crossovers are better, Fortnite’s or Dead by Daylight’s? We’ve seen both perspectives and here’s where we unfold the whole thing.
As most young teens and video game veterans would already know, Fortnite has become a VERY prominent platform for pop culture crossovers (You know, kpop, reality tv, anime, the works basically). This family-friendly online multiplayer game quickly showed its amazing potential for crossovers, starting with a much-hyped collaboration with Marvel during the Avengers: Infinity War event. Virtual high-fives to the people who remember it! Since then, Fortnite has continued to host crossovers with various entertainment franchises, including Star Wars, Marvel, DC, The Walking Dead, Futurama, and even anime like Attack on Titan and My Hero Academia, which is just a very smart way to reach out to everyone no matter what they’re into. Smart move, Devs.
Fortnite's crossovers have become frequent and very important, often being part of the game's seasonal Battle Pass and featuring limited-time modes. While these crossovers are generally well-received… some players believe they lack the same level of effort and integration seen in crossovers from games like Dead by Daylight (remember the hunter-survivor game we talked about before?)
Fortnite's crossovers have had mixed feedback from the folks, with some being excellent and others feeling less impactful. In recent years, these collaborations have brought various paid cosmetics and skins to the game, often based on popular franchises. At their best, Fortnite's crossovers have gone the extra mile, offering mini–Battle Passes with exclusive rewards, themed quests, and even time-limited Mythic weapons inspired by the source material.
These collaborations well, typically involve a significant amount of effort, and the fact that most events can be enjoyed without spending money makes them attractive to fans of the featured franchise. However, as Fortnite continues to bring on a high volume of crossovers, some players feel that they are becoming less relevant, with many blending together and primarily consisting of new skins without significant gameplay changes.
Dead by Daylight's approach, on the other hand, is distinct from Fortnite's. Since its release in 2016, Dead by Daylight has embraced crossovers with various horror franchises, including Saw, The Ring, Resident Evil, and Silent Hill. Unlike Fortnite, where crossovers often involve skins and cosmetics, Dead by Daylight's crossovers have a profound impact on the game's core experience.
In Dead by Daylight, each crossover introduces a new Killer, a new Survivor, and a new map, all tied to the theme of the featured franchise. These crossovers not only bring fan service and references but also integrate them into the gameplay itself. The special abilities and perks of the characters reflect the source material, offering new and unique ways to play. Additionally, any new perks introduced during crossovers become available for all characters in the game, enhancing the overall experience.
This approach showcases the developers' dedication to working with licenses and delivering a well-integrated crossover experience that enriches the game's content and gameplay.
