Asus Zephyrus G16 Review: The Ultimate All-Rounder or Overpriced Hype?
Exploring Whether the Asus Zephyrus G16 Justifies Its Price with Balanced Performance in Gaming and Productivity. A Deep Dive into Performance, Design, and Value.
There's no doubt that the Asus Zephyrus G16 is a powerful all-rounder, combining impressive gaming performance with good content creation capabilities. It's got the AMD Ryzen 9 HX 3700 CPU, with 12 cores and 24 threads as well as the NVIDIA RTX 4060 GPU making for a strong option whether you're gaming or creating. However, any product that always try to pack in so much, is always weighed down when it comes to delivering exceptional performance across all fronts. So, does it really justify the 2 lacs price tag? Read on to find out.
Design & Build
Design-wise the Zephyrus series has been refreshed to offer a better aesthetical approach from Asus. The Asus Zephyrus G16 is also significantly slimmer and lighter than its forebears at just 1.85 kg,17 mm thick. The CNC aluminum chassis feels more robust and metallic compared to previous models, with very little keyboard or lid flex, while Asus has replaced the animated matrix screen with a pleasant hint of slash lighting that brings some class to the look without going overboard. And, it has all the ports you need — even HDMI 2.1 — so you don't have to carry a dongle around.
Naturally, the thin and light theme also makes it susceptible to any physical damage, making it not at all suitable for rugged use. The Zephyrus G16, have a glossy finish to enhance color vibrancy and contrast. However, this type of finish tends to show fingerprints and smudges more easily compared to matte screens, which takes away it's brilliant aesthetics if not cleaned regularly.
Display & Audio
The 16-inch 2.5K IPS display offers a 240Hz refresh rate and NVIDIA G-Sync support, making it ideal for fast-paced gaming. With 100% DCI-P3 color coverage, it also excels in color accuracy, which content creators will appreciate. Surprisingly, its brightness and vividness rival OLED displays, creating an truly immersive viewing experience with exceptional color gamut. But what truly sets is apart is the 500 nit brightness, making the laptop an effective option for outdoor use and content creation.
Adding to the multimedia experience is of course the six-speaker Dolby 7.1 setup that delivers punchy bass and crisp audio, perfect for both gaming and watching movies, but above all, as the best portable speaker that easily replace the mini Bluetooth speakers you own.
Performance
Powered by AMD’s Zen 5 architecture, the latest Ryzen 9 HX 3700 chip, coupled with an RTX 4060 GPU, it is a deadly powerhouse capable of excelling across every application. This machine can handle any demanding title, including Cyberpunk 2077 and Red Dead Redemption 2 at 1080p settings north of a frame rate of 150FPS. The G16 held up pretty well in 2.5K resolution, too.
For content creation, there is 16GB of LPDDR5X and a high-speed 1TB PCIe Gen 4 for SSD storage. Everything from video editing in Premiere Pro to complex After Effects projects work great, and Photoshop is still fast. But the RAM is soldered, so upgrade potential in the future could be limited.
Cooling & Battery Life
A liquid metal cooling system ensures the Zephyrus G16 stays chilled even during the most intense gaming or rendering session. The fans stay pretty quiet, however, even at 85°C compared to bulkier gaming laptops. The 90Whr battery provides around 6-7 hours of normal usage, though this significantly drops during gaming. Fortunately, the fast charging capability allows a 50% charge in just 30 minutes.
