Roblox Parental Control: Enhanced Safety Measures for Kids Under 13

Roblox is taking safety seriously with new measures for kids under 13, including removing direct messages, updated parental controls, and an overhauled content rating system. Learn what’s changing and why.

Roblox is continuing to work on safety improvements for its younger users, many of whom are under 13 years of age. Such changes aim to give parents greater control while ensuring that the experience of those kids is safe and free of risk. Here is what's changing and why.

No More Direct Messages For Kids Under 13

The biggest change? Under-13s will no longer be able to send or receive direct messages on Roblox—except in game-to-game chat. That means platform-wide chatting is out for younger users unless a parent enables it through updated Parental Controls within Roblox.

According to Roblox, the decision balances access with safety, allowing kids to chat within games while minimizing associated risks from private chats.

Overhauled Content Ratings: What Can Children Play?

Roblox is also unveiling a new content rating system to better classify games and experiences on the platform. The new system divides content into four categories:

  • Minimal: Mild violence, light unrealistic blood, and occasional fear.
  • Mild: Repeated mild violence, heavy unrealistic blood, crude humor, and mild fear.
  • Moderate: Moderate violence, light realistic blood, moderate crude humor, and unplayable gambling content.
  • Adults only: violence-gory, realistic blood, romantic elements, harsh language, and alcohol use.

Automatically:

 • Children younger than 9 will see only "Minimal" or "Mild".
 • Children under 13 will require parental consent to view "Moderate".

These limits will change automatically as children grow up and enter new age groups. Thus, this process will be hidden from parents.

Why the Change?

The push by Roblox for tighter security comes amid growing issues regarding its safety measures. Recent reports, such as the one from Bloomberg, have cited risks like child predators exploiting the platform. A separate investigation done by Hindenburg Research branded Roblox a "pedophile hellscape" where there are growing concerns about children's safety online.

These updates would be deployed entirely by early 2025, addressing the aforementioned criticisms directly, prioritizing parental oversight and age-appropriate access.

What’s Next?

Roblox’s updated measures aim to create a more secure, family-friendly environment. While there’s still work to be done to regain trust, these steps mark a positive shift in addressing the platform’s safety concerns.

This makes it clear the changes are part of the efforts to maintain the Roblox fun approach while ensuring safety. Look out for updates coming by early 2025!
