There are three tiers of PS Plus subscription on the PSN Store for the players to buy. They are essential, extra and premium. Subscribers based on which subscription they have signed up for get a set of games they get to play free for a certain duration.

Playstation players with an essential tier of subscription can add the free game to the library and play the game whenever they wish too. When these games leave the essential users have the games added to their collection permanently until they have the subscription active.
