Turtle Rock Studios worked for Valve under a contract for Counter-Strike: Condition Zero. Zombie City mod: Left 4 Dead early prototype leaked
This mod was made for Counter-Strike: Source and it’s called Zombie City. While the mod is called Zombie City, there are sadly no zombies there to get their heads blown off. Instead, players face Counter Strike terrorist bots which attack them in groups using knives only.
Modder WolfCl0ck leaked this mod and can be downloaded by players now. PC Gamer highlighted that Turtle Rock founder Michael Booth talked about this mod in the Left 4 Dead commentary track.
“While we were developing bots for Counter-Strike: Source we discovered that a few of us armed to the teeth with automatic weaponry against 30 knife-wielding enemy bots was a lot of fun. After shipping Counter-Strike: Source in late 2004 we started experimenting with new game prototypes. That basic kernel of ‘small team of friends against hordes of clawing enemies’ was something we kept coming back to and we soon realized that the ‘co-op vs the horde game’ had a ton of potential.”
The studio’s Left 4 Dead game was released in 2008 and received positive responses from fans and critics. The game featured a squad of four people taking on hordes of zombies. Left 4 Dead 2 was the sequel and was released a year later in 2009. Since then, there have been no further instalments in the series.
