Sony releases new firmware update for PS5; still does not come with Variable Refresh Rate

The VRR support is already available for Xbox Series X|S. Find out about the recent updates for PS5 in the article below.

Sony has just released a new system update for PlayStation 5. The new update is disappointing for gamers who are hoping for VRR (variable refresh rate) support to be added to Sony’s next-gen gaming console.

Variable refresh rate allows for smoother gameplay on all the TVs and PC monitors that support HDMI 2.1 as it reduces screen tearing and frame rate issues. The monitor’s refresh rate gets synced in with PS5’s graphical output through VRR.

Sony had earlier announced that VRR support would be added to the console soon and many were hoping for an update regarding it. Sony also said that games that do not have native support for VRR could end up having “unexpected” visual effects if the feature is enabled for those games by the players.

The current patch note says that “This system software update improves system performance.” There have been no further details given about how exactly system performance will be improved through this update.

Details about previous Sony PlayStation 5 firmware updates

The firmware update before this was much more important in terms of the changes implemented. Game Base saw the most changes taking place. Sony divided Game Base into Friends, Parties, and Messages tabs. The voice chats section got renamed and became 'Parties'. Players could also start Share Play without having to launch Share Screen like before. The Auto Low Latency Mode was also added in the last update.

Accessibility features were also added with Screen Reader able to speak notifications, new languages were added including support for the Ukrainian language, and the option for mono audio on headphones was also included. 'Trophies' section saw the addition of suggested trophies to track and voice commands were added to PS5 (for UK and US only).

Several other features were introduced with that update. Prior to that, the patch update from Sony in September last year was crucial. The PlayStation firmware update allowed an M.2 SSD drive to be installed in PS5’s expansion slot for more storage.

So, in comparison to previous updates, this one fell short of expectations but hopefully, the VRR feature gets added for PS5 soon. The feature is already available on Xbox Series X|S consoles.
