The massive outrage over the infamous “SMS Protect” for Overwatch 2 on Battle.net, does not seem like the end of it for Activision Blizzard. A Battle.net Support page now suggests that the upcoming Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 2 too will require you to add your phone number to register for the game. If you’re wondering what the fuss is all about, find out more about what the issue with the SMS Protect has been regarding Overwatch 2, down below. Let us see what chances there is that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will also create similar issues. In other news, Activision Blizzard has now dropped new trailers for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II. Here’s all the latest on CoD: Modern Warfare II.
Blizzard's SMS Protect- What is the big deal?
For context, Battle.net is Activision’s own marketplace for games. Blizzard’s latest, Overwatch 2 has launched only on Battle.net for PC. People who wanted to download it had to register their phone numbers for the same. However, for some reason, only those phone numbers which had a post-paid policy could be used to link the accounts. As a result, a number of players got blocked out from being able to download and play the game. The large number of reports ultimately led Blizzard to remove their SMS Protect, which they announced on October 8th.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II might require post-paid phone number registrations
The Battle.net Support page now informs that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, and newly created Call of Duty Modern Warfare accounts will “require that you add a phone number to your Battle.net account”.
While Blizzard claims that the 2-step text verification, via the SMS Protect is important to restrict cheaters and hackers, it puts a number of players at an inconvenience. So Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 which is all the hype right now, ahead of its October 28th release, also requiring this frustrating security system, is not good news. A Modern Warfare II beta player has even pointed out how it is basically getting into a contract with a telecom company, before being allowed to play the game they’ve already paid for.
It should also be noted that unlike Overwatch 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II will also be launching on Steam for PC, apart from Battle.net. It is still not clear if this mobile number registration will be required on Steam as well, given that only some Steam beta players have reported being asked for their numbers.
