Riot Games confirms VALORANT will transition from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5. Learn how this engine upgrade could shape the game's future with potential expansions and new features.
Riot Games is confirming that their massively hit first-person shooter VALORANT will be moved from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5. Said simply, this means the game gets a very technological boost-up with the promise of better future capabilities, though it won't probably change immediately anything for players in terms of gameplay or performance. According to SVP and Head of VALORANT Studios Anna Donlon, the shift is all for a long-term perspective.
Riot Games Explains the Move to Unreal Engine 5
In the announcement, Donlon explained the reasoning behind the switch, saying that "We have squeezed literally every ounce of everything we could get out of Unreal Engine 4, so now we make the move to UE5, and that is not an easy feat when your game is a live service game but it is necessary." That represents a behemoth undertaking, particularly for a live service game, wherein any and all changes can break balance or cause performance issues.
Donlon promised the community that a transition should not mark a period of severe visual or performance change, at least in the short term. However, she hinted at exciting possibilities Unreal Engine 5 could unlock for VALORANT in the future as well, saying, "Maybe those devs are working on something I can't talk about, and maybe those devs are thinking about ways to expand the VALORANT universe into new playable experiences."
This teaser widely generated intrigue throughout the VALORANT community, with players theorising about potential expansions - including new game modes, more immersive maps, or even spin-off games within the VALORANT universe. However, at this point, not too many specifics are available, so at the very least, people will remain excited over the prospect of expanding the franchise.
Community Reactions
The reactions have been mixed: some are thrilled about the game's prospects going forward, while others wonder how and if a major engine shift will affect the stability of their live-service title. "UE5 could be a game-changer for VALORANT, but please don't break anything," tweeted one fan-whose sentiment seemed to reflect that cautious optimism many of those fans share.
As VALORANT continues to move forward with 28 million players, a constant 70% of whom are Gen Z, the switch to Unreal Engine 5 might very well be the beginning of the end of this iteration of the game. The real impact the switch might have on that may not be immediately felt, but it seems clear that Riot Games is definitely positioning themselves for an even more expansive and possibly revolutionary future of the VALORANT universe. The final judgement is still something to be waited for as the fans get surprised about what riot has planned to come into existence.
