A retro video game store owner is retiring and offering his valuable collection for $1 million, but Elon Musk will have to pay an extra $500k.
Collecting classic video games can be an expensive endeavour, especially if you're searching for rare finds. Take Super Mario Bros 3 for instance, a sealed copy of the iconic game recently sold for an eye-watering price of $156,000 at an auction. Along the same vein, two never-before-opened versions of Pokémon Red & Yellow recently sold for a whopping $160,000, highlighting the popularity of the beloved gaming franchise.
This craze doesn’t just extend to the mainline Pokémon games, however, the trading cards associated with the company are also subject to some hefty prices in the market. Unfortunately, such popularity also breeds criminal activities like theft, making a mockery of the collectors’ efforts.
A million-dollar opportunity for gamers and collectors
Very often regular players are unaware of the potential value of such games and accessories. So, for $1 million, you could buy an entire retro game shop and hope to strike gold. Dave Smith, a long-time entrepreneur and owner of Dave's Retro Games in Sacramento, started the store in the late 1980s. After over 30 years of successfully running the shop, Smith is now looking to take a step back and enjoy retirement.
To achieve this, the long-time owner recently decided to list the shop for sale at the staggeringly high sum of $1 million, which amazingly Elon Musk will be required to pay $500,000 extra for. While Mr Smith’s retirement and the upgraded job opportunities for young gamers are excellent incentives for such a venture, the shop is an ideal opportunity for wealthy individuals to discard their adult “gamer child” over the age of 21.
"Just pay the money. I am ready to retire," reads the description in the Craigslist post. "I will give you everything, My garage is full, no room for the car. Great way to employ your gamer kid. The store comes with everything to repair, clean and retail games."
The attached images showcase the offerings of Dave's Retro Games, including a 15-foot inflatable Mario. The collection also features an extensive selection of PlayStation 2 games, as well as Nintendo titles from consoles like the N64, NES, and DS.
