Age of Empires Mobile Launches October 2024: New Modes, Epic Battles & Strategic Depth

A New Direction, Not Just a Port

When Age of Empires Mobile was announced, reactions were understandably mixed. But TiMi Studios and Level Infinite, the developer and publisher behind this mobile version, are putting in real effort to make it feel true to the franchise. While it’s not a direct port of the original RTS, the mobile game manages to capture the essence of the series with the familiar resource system (food, wood, stone, and gold) and iconic civilizations like the Byzantines and Franks. It’s more than just nostalgia, though—it’s a whole new experience. Age of Empires mobile is all set to release on Android and iOS on October 17th, 2024.

Not Just for Old Fans

Here’s the thing: this game isn’t built just for die-hard Age of Empires fans. Microsoft and the developers are targeting a new audience—mobile gamers—with hopes that some might eventually move to PC. It’s designed more like an old-school browser game, like Fireboy and Watergirl, but with modern mobile mechanics thrown in.

You’ll still see those epic battles and resource management, but buildings and tech upgrades take days to complete in real time (hello, time boosters!).

Choose Your Civilization and Heroes

You can dive into battles with eight different civilizations, including the Byzantines, Romans, Chinese, French, Japanese, and Koreans, with more on the way. Plus, there are 30 iconic historic heroes to collect and lead your armies. These heroes each come with unique skills, and you can form teams of three, creating combos that either synergize for max power or counter your opponent’s strengths.

Alliance Sieges: A Whole New Level

One of the coolest features is the alliance sieges, where entire player alliances can band together for massive battles. You’ll deploy troops, ships, and siege weapons to take down enemy cities. Once the gates are broken, it’s all about coordinating with your team to wipe out the defenders and focus on key buildings to conquer the city. This massive-scale warfare brings something new to the table, even for seasoned Age of Empires players.

 

Single-Player Surprises

The devs didn’t forget about those who enjoy a good solo campaign. They’ve packed in some surprising single-player modes:

• Battlefield Survivors: A Vampire Survivors-style bullet hell mode where you gather resources to take back to your empire.
• Military Exercise: A testing ground to experiment with different heroes and units.
• Island Tactics: A cool auto-chess mode for strategy lovers.
• Lost Borderland: An extraction mode where you push through waves of enemies, with the risky choice to retreat with your loot or push for more.
