Intel has announced its collaboration with eight renowned Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) companies and Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) to accelerate laptop manufacturing in India.
In a significant move to strengthen India's electronics manufacturing industry, Intel has unveiled a groundbreaking collaboration with eight prominent Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) companies and Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) to accelerate laptop manufacturing in the country. This strategic partnership aims to leverage Intel's comprehensive knowledge of the IT industry ecosystem to lay the foundation for a robust laptop manufacturing industry in India, aligning with the government's Make in India initiative.
The eight companies involved in this collaboration are Bhagwati Products Ltd, Dixon Technologies India Ltd, Kaynes Technology India Ltd, Optiemus Electronics Ltd, Panache Digilife Ltd, Smile Electronics Ltd, Syrma SGS Technology Ltd, and VVDN Technologies Private Ltd. For several of these companies, this marks their maiden venture into the laptop manufacturing segment. The collaboration between Intel and these Indian manufacturers is geared toward helping them meet both domestic and global demand.
Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, expressed his satisfaction with Intel's engagement in India's electronics manufacturing ecosystem, stating, "I am very pleased that global organizations like Intel are partnering with India, helping to build and catalyze the electronics manufacturing ecosystem for laptops and compute. This aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision to drive India's Digital Economy to $1 Trillion and enable the electronics manufacturing ecosystem to contribute $300 billion by 2025-26. It is our Prime Minister's determined goal that the Indian Electronics Ecosystem should have deep and broad capabilities and that Indian Electronics Manufacturing Companies should grow, scale, and expand their footprint as trusted players in the Electronics Global Value Chains."
As part of this collaboration, Intel shared its expertise to facilitate the production of complete entry-level laptops in India. This involved leveraging state-of-the-art Surface Mount Technology (SMT) assembly lines, establishing a robust quality control process for components, and benchmarking the finished products. Additionally, Intel provided support to ODMs, spanning both Semi Knocked Down (SKD) and Completely Knocked Down (CKD) processes.
Santhosh Viswanathan, VP & MD, India Region, Intel, remarked on the significance of the collaboration, stating, "The collaboration between Intel and the Indian manufacturing ecosystem marks a pivotal moment for the Indian electronics industry. Intel has been the fundamental enabler of several electronic ecosystems across the world, and we are excited about fueling the same in India. Bringing in Intel's technology-related investments and global system supply chain ecosystem knowledge exemplifies our dedication to fostering electronic manufacturing capabilities in India. By enabling the laptop manufacturing process – from surface mount technology assembly to finished product – we are not only meeting the demands of the Make in India initiative but also contributing to the technological progress of the nation."
Intel is set to host the India Tech Ecosystem Summit later in November, an event that will bring together many local manufacturers to showcase an expanded portfolio of devices made in India. The Indian electronics manufacturing industry stands at an exciting crossroads, with numerous opportunities on the horizon. Intel is committed to enabling access and opportunities for the technology ecosystem in India, including Indian IT product manufacturers. It will continue collaborating with the government, industry, and the startup community to create a meaningful impact for the country.
