A new unannounced project at WB Montreal is now in production.
The next DC game has already entered production. WB Montreal released Gotham Knights a couple of months ago in October. There’s also an upcoming DC game coming as Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is scheduled for a 2023 release. WB Montreal’s Senior Producer recently updated his LinkedIn bio and it refers to a new unannounced game from the studio. WB Montreal’s Senior Producer, Bryan Theberge, recently updated his LinkedIn bio which mentions that a new unannounced project is now in the works, as highlighted by James Sigfield on Twitter.
New DC game could be part of James Gunn's new DC universe
James Gunn is co-heading the future of DC and he recently revealed that video games would very much contribute towards telling the story of the new DC universe. Perhaps this new project could be the first video game which exists in that newfound DC universe. At the same time, the building blocks for a decade-long DC universe are yet to be established. We know that Superman will no longer be played by Henry Cavill. Other than that, there has not been much to go on about the cinematic future of DC.
So for a video game to reach conceptual stages as part of this new universe could be a stretch, given that James Gunn has just joined as the creative head of this universe. So, it might just be a different project that was already in the works or is not associated with the cinematic universe. Also, several IPs are owned by Warner Bros, so perhaps it's not a DC game after all. It's still early to jump to conclusions but one thing is clear, WB Montreal are working on a new AAA title.
Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League
WB Montreal delivered Gotham Knights earlier this October and it received an average reception from critics and a negative response from the fans. While the studio tried its best to avoid comparison to the Arkham series, the bar set by its success will forever loom over any DC game in the making.
Gotham Knights’ premise quite explicitly states that Batman is dead and now the fate of Gotham rests upon the shoulders of his loyal sidekicks Nightwing, Red Hood, Batgirl, and Robin. As for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, it is developed by Rocksteady Studios, who were responsible for delivering the iconic Batman Arkham series.
While there’s no Batman in Gotham Knights, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will feature the late Kevin Conroy as Batman for one last time, the role he shone in for all the Arkham series video games. This game will pit the Suicide Squad against a rogue Justice League as the misfits try to take down Earth’s most prolific superhero team.
